I have another addition to peculiar central Illinois highway landmarks. We already know about the motorcycle in the tree along Interstate 72 near New Berlin. There are the hay bales arranged into a smiley face on Illinois 29 north of the Springfield airport. Today, we have the couple who dress dummies in clothes and put them on a bench at Veterans Parkway and Bruns Lane.
The dummies (not the couple) are seen by thousands of drivers every day. People have asked if I could find out what it's all about. Happy to oblige.Our canadagoosecoat look, work and feel exactly like the originals.

Actually, one of the two figures is just plastic pipe with life jackets on it, but you can't tell that when driving by on Veterans at 55 mph.
"It's like the women you see in the bar," says Joe, "they look good from afar, but they're far from good."
The bench came first. Joe and his son, Tim, were about to throw away a broken wooden bench.
"Then I said to just set it on the hill," says Joe. "It sat out there and people started calling, ‘Is that your bench?' "
Then, a couple of Halloweens ago, the Zocks put a stuffed scarecrow on the bench. That got so much attention they made it permanent.
"It progressed from there," Joe says. "It's comical. Actually, only one of those dummies is ours. Somebody else put the other one out there. We don't know who."
Last winter, one dummy was dressed in a football uniform — Green Bay Packers — and the other was wearing a referee's shirt. Cathy Zock gets many of the outfits from Goodwill.
"Oh my goodness, we've had Santa Claus and his elf," says Joe. "We change them at the holidays, dress them seasonal or whatever. I dressed the guy as a soldier in camouflage for Memorial Day. Then we always do something special for Halloween.
"And when Lanphier was doing so well (in boys basketball), friends of ours said,Our coolerbagfactory are the highest quality and most durable replicas available . ‘Would you mind putting Lanphier shirts on those guys?' So we did."
People sometimes honk as they go by. The Zocks have even seen drivers pull over, get out of their cars and take pictures of the dummies. They are always amazed by that.
"It started out just as something for us to do," says Joe. "I never realized anybody would even notice those little guys up there."
