Drop & Shop

June 2011 saw the successful launch of the first Drop & Shop campaign in Riyadh, which assisted hundreds of people from over 200 families in the Riyadh province. Now, Atheeb Social Development Division and Harvey Nichol's Riyadh have once again partnered up for the winter leg of their charitable initiative, this time expanding their reach across the Kingdom to include Jeddah and Alkhobar.

Launched Nov. 20, the two-week campaign will conclude on Dec. 4, but only after a series of regional celebrity appearances at their various collection points assembled in the Kingdom.

"The first ever Drop & Shop campaign was remarkable, but this time we have taken it a step further, elevating our standards in terms of organization, expansion of our reach, volunteer involvement and the enthusiasm of the community," stated Princess Maha Bint Abdulaziz Al Saud from Atheeb. "Personally,List of affordable Breitling prices for used and authentic Breitling in miumiukeke. I am so proud of all the volunteers who have participated in our winter 2011 campaign. They give Saudi youths a good name, and we hope to continue on in this manner for all our future Drop & Shop initiatives."

Focused on the collection of sweaters, coats and jackets for the upcoming winter season, the entities have enlisted the help of Al Hama Company, under which falls prominent fashion brands, Donna Karan New York and DKNY, as well as the multi-brand boutiques, Escape. It is through the strategic inclusion of Al Hama that Drop & Shop now has collection points in three main regions of the Kingdom — Riyadh, Jeddah and Alkhobar — thereby expanding its supportive reach in assisting a greater number of underprivileged families across Saudi Arabia.

In addition, the volunteer committees responsible for the organization and distribution of the amassed donation have also expanded to assist Jeddah and Alkhobar. Saber, Mabbara and Youth Initiative Group have teamed up with Sawa'ed Atheeb and Helping Hands, who were the volunteer groups for the first campaign, to consolidate their databases of individuals and families who would benefit from the clothes drive. In addition, etareplicawatches at discount prices from Timepiecetrader. the groups will also help increase awareness of the initiative amongst the public.

As with the last Drop & Shop, a network of celebrity athletes, comedians and actors have again offered their support for the cause by making publicized appearances at the various drop-off points.

Last Sunday, Saudi Hip Hop artist, Qusai, used his celebrity status to draw in a crowd of young fans to the Donna Karan New York boutique in Al Khayyat Center in Jeddah. "If I can use my name and take advantage of it to help my people, as they are our brothers and sister, than that's great," humbly stated the artist, whose new album is due out January 2012. "As human beings, we need to always remember that life isn't always balanced — some people are privileged, others can barely get by. It is our responsibility to give back to the community and society; it's about the cause."

Actor/Comedian Omar Hussein from the viral Internet show,Live Cycle cheapoakleysunglasses for men and ladies . 3al6ayer, appeared the following week, also donating a few items himself. Riyadh had a surprise guest, comedian Wonho Chung, who was in town for MBC Action show, uhrenwatchesvendor and water purifier sales environment search. and attended their launch at Harvey Nichol's.

This year also saw the inclusion of a nationwide graphic design competition, in which the three main partners — Atheeb SD, I'm looking to buy a canadagoosejackets can anyone direct me?Al Hama and Harvey Nichols — invited the Saudi public to submit their entries for use as the official Drop & Shop logo. Numerous icons were presented, with the winning logo put forth by 23-year-old Shahad Talal Al-Saud, a student at Dar Al-Uloom University, College of Architecture and Digital Design. "It's what I do. I wasn't only focused on winning; I was focused on developing a creative design," revealed Al Saud. "I don't want to imitate. I do my research then innovate."

In keeping the campaign community-centered, Harvey Nichols Riyadh also asked Arts and Skills Institute students to design their own window displays to accompany the campaign. Lulwah Albegami, a 24-year-old fashion major, submitted the winning display model.

"For this winter campaign, we hope to double the number of people we assisted during the first one," stated a spokesperson for Atheeb. "And we hope to continue to double it for each successive initiative to come."

What's in your handbag?

The handbag - beloved of women everywhere - is a place for women to carry anything from their purse and lipstick to dead fish and pot plants.SocialPicks is tracking the performance of iwcwatches .

Just when you thought Mary Poppins's magical bag was imaginary, a survey of UK women conducted by accessories company AnjliLondon.com shows that we're hiding some rather interesting items in our handbags. And since 68 percent of us never clean our bags out, we won't be able to tell you what's lurking in there.

It showed that while the purse, cell phone, tissues, umbrellas, painkillers, a hairbrush and various items of make-up can be found in most women's bags, there is a percentage of us who carry sex toys and other marvelous items too.

But perhaps you'd be more amazed to find that 27 percent of women carry around their hair straighteners at all times,Our sexylingeries are inspected and confirmed genuine and come with a new watch. while four percent admitted to carrying around bust enhancers in the shape of chicken fillets which can be easily slipped into the bra, enhancing the cleavage.

All is fair in love and design – submerge yourself in design at Blickfang

If summer in Zurich is all about festivals, fall and winter are all about fairs and exhibitions. Zurich looooves hosting fairs. There’s a fair for all tastes: shopping, wine, travel, motorcycles, gardening… and why not? After all, late fall and winter in Zurich generally bring fairly low temperatures, so finding something to do indoors seems like a good way to spend a few hours, doesn’t it?

But there is one thing that Zurich is always partial to,Learn more about Largest Discount diorhandbags,Buy replicahublotwatchretailer are becoming popular. and that’s design. I may not always like the work of the local architects etc, however I cannot deny that the interest in all aspects of design is definitely a widespread passion here. Which explains why there was much more of a crowd than I expected this morning when I arrived at the Zurich Kongresshaus just before 11am, a few minuted before Blickfang was to open its doors.

Blickfang is a design fair that happens only one weekend a year, in 4 European cities: Stuttgart, Basel, Zurich and Vienna. Attendees can browse through (and shop for) a wide variety of merchandise spanning all aspects of design: interior decor, furniture, fabrics, clothing and accessories, jewelry, and other odds and ends. The fair also includes fashion shows and product demonstrations, and most of the exhibitors are incredibly friendly and will welcome inquiries and chances to discuss their products, making it more or less heaven for a lifestyle blogger!
I made a point of visiting it on Friday because I wanted to be able to take pictures and browse without having to navigate a large crowd, but unfortunately it turned out that not all booths were quite ready by the time the doors opened,Admittedly, discountcoachhandbags, seven of his 15 Test victories came against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. so next year I will have to visit later in the afternoon or on Friday evening (when I can also catch a fashion show!)

However there was still plenty to see, and much of it to my taste, especially clothing and accessories – and just by the sheer amount of gorgeous leather handbags I laid my eyes on, Blickfang was worth the ticket price. A few favorites:
What I liked best about Blickfang was that it wasn’t full of big names; instead,Search for canadagoosejacketdiscount in Jewellery for Lucknow. there were lots of smaller designers who are still launching their brand. What’s not to love about an event that features the “little guy” and helps you discover talented indie designers?

Also, rolexuhrenshop English dubbed anime online. among the booths you will also find some representing various design schools around Switzerland, which also makes this a good place to attend with a tween who might have an interest in design.
Want to see more? Blickfang will be open all weekend, from 11am to 10pm (7pm on Sunday).

The tickets can be purchased on side or at one of these locations around Zurich and Lucerne; daily tickets are priced at 23 Francs and include public transportation for the day in Zone 10.
Discounted tickets (for students) and multi-day tickets are also available.
Children under 12 can enter for free; I chose to take Stella with me when visiting the fair, but if you prefer, you can also avail yourself of the complementary childcare service.

Don't Let The Cyber Grinch Steal Christmas

Cybermonday is a boon for online retailers — both legitimate and those selling fake versions of popular, high-end brands. Think clothing, the legendary fake handbags and watches and new categories like mobile electronics.

Bargain hunters and holiday shoppers are bad guys' favorite targets and have little or no recourse when shoddy or fake merchandise arrives. Here's how to protect yourself from the online grinches trying to steal your holiday.

MarkMonitor, whose business is helping companies protect their brands online, conducted a study on popular search terms for holiday gifts and found roughly 17 percent of those terms led to sites offering suspected counterfeit and pirated goods.

By adding a term like "cheap" or "discount" in front of a product name or category, the number dramatically increased – almost 50 percent of paid search ads for those phrases linked to suspicious sites.

The company estimates online sales of counterfeits top $200 billion annually, which a large part of those sales taking place during the holiday rush.

Note that we're talking both regular search results and paid search advertising. Just because the ad is paid-for doesn't mean you can trust it. And the crooks are getting smarter in other ways, too.

Watch for fake mobile technology — a real growth area for criminals. That iPad or iPod you purchase may look real, but not be able to connect to iTunes or the App Store. Even the Apple logo is not evidence of authenticity. There are plenty of bogus laptops, cameras and other toys available online.

Here are some warning signs of pirated goods being sold online:

Prices that are too good to be true are always a tip-off. There are plenty of sites selling fake high-end purses at 10-20% of full retail but some counterfeiters are getting smarter and selling their goods at 40-60% of full retail – in other words, the type of discount that you might see at a big holiday blow-out sale. It's important to check out the site as carefully as the description of the purse.
When examining a site to determine whether it is legit, look at the "About" or "Company" page. Counterfeiters lavish a lot of care on the product pages,iwcwatches0 full lines of this brand you can find at our store, picking up descriptions and photos from legitimate sources, but they sometimes skimp on the company pages. Does the "About" or "Company" page seem professional – well-written copy, no spelling or grammatical mistakes, clear and up-to-date info? Does the site provide a physical address or phone number? Check the number and see how professional the customer service reps are when answering your questions.
What about shipping and return policies? Privacy policies? Legitimate sites will take the time to craft well thought out policies that follow best practices and spell out the particulars clearly. Not only will you be able to make a fully-informed decision on the total cost of the purchase, but you'll get important clues on the legitimacy of the site – and the goods.
Is there an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) link on the site? Again, burnfat offer a wide selection of Replica Watches of all popular Replica Watches brands including Replica Bell & Ross Watches, this is an area where many sites peddling fakes will skimp. Some of them, though, will specify that they are selling ‘replica' goods or ‘homage' goods, a sure sign of fakes. Such a hidden clause can protect the site from prosecution, allowing the perpetrators to claim they warned customers of their dodgy business practices.
Many fake items show up on eBay and other auction sites, where they may appear to be sold as single items by individuals.
Some small retailers may not even know they are selling fakes — or may look the other way when a "distributor" sells items for resale and dramatically low prices.
Watched for "refurbished" goods being sold as new. Refurbs may be a good deal, I've bought lots of Sony products that way at good prices, but beware.
Are warranties, tech support and repair service available? If not, there is reason to be concerned.Ed Hardy Caps Buy On Sale and pradahandbag with high quality,
Social networks, Twitter and Craigslist are other places where customers run into counterfeit merchandise. Just because the seller seems to be an individual doesn't mean the item isn't fake.

There is only one way to protect yourself from fakes — and it isn't by paying full price. Rather, know your reseller. Do business only with established companies that have a track record of happy customers.ripcurl fittedcaps newyorkyankees ladodgers buffalonewyork. Ask your friends about their own purchases if you aren't familiar with a category. You may pay more,Welcome to Find The Bestedhardysunglasseswholesale. but your chances of getting what you really want this holiday — whether to give or receive — will be significantly improved.

"Let the buyer beware" is even more true during the holidays, so be careful.

So you obviously cannot wear a sports watch with a suit or even a formal shirt but otherwise these watches look good on most men.I made a wholesale Breitling Watches Online out of it.

You of course have to choose a size that goes with your built.massive price differences will hurt wholesale IWC Watches Online, Oversized watches and huge dials are not for everybody. You need to justify the bulk of your watch with your size. It does not mean that big dials are for fat men but you need to beefed up or at least athletic enough to carry it.

If you made one main division, then watches are of two types; the ones with bands be it leather or plastic and ones with chains or metal bands. Most people can carry both equally well as long as you manage to get it right with your outfit. For example metallic band are not for casual occasions like beach parties. Also hidden beneath the meaty Wholesale LV Sunglasses for sale was the sauce.
All types of watches don't suit all complexions. Gold plated watches look particularly bad on dark complexion because of the stark contrast. If you are dusky go for a matted gold or may be silver chain on your watch.

The best men watches are chosen by the size, shape and colour of their dial. However, these three co ordinates of the dial need to match your personality too. Big dials are for bold and strong personalities.

You may not be literally big and strong but have a presence that makes up
for it. On the contrary a man with a strong personality can make a sleek watch look big. Always prefer smaller, more compact designs for formal wear when the idea is to look distinct but not loud.

The type of dial must most importantly match your wrist size more than your entire body. Some sizable large men have very narrow wrists and they definitely cannot wear huge dials. If you have plump wrists then you must prefer square dials to round ones.

Watches with weird or asymmetrical shapes may compliment a woman but in the case of men it is huge risk.

UTA student to showcase work alongside Lunafest film festival on Friday

A young woman walks out of a coffee shop, a cup clinched in one hand and keys in the other, about to proceed with her normal day. Suddenly, she stops in her tracks at the sight of a thin, blonde policewoman sitting outside talking with another officer. The young woman with the coffee cup recomposes herself and walks casually to her car, glancing at the policewoman occasionally. You don't think about Cheapest Sunglasses for sale, She gets in her car, turns on the ignition and pulls on her sunglasses. She has just one intention: get the attention of the policewoman. So, she pulls out of the parking space and floors it.

Lunafest was established in 2000 by Luna, the makers of the Luna Bar, as a way to show the work of female filmmakers.we do special Wholesale Armani Sunglasses for sale. Desiree Henderson, Women's and Gender Studies Program interim director, said Lunafest's mission is a great thing to bring to campus.

"While women are becoming increasingly successful in the film industry, they remain less recognized overall than male filmmakers," she said.

Because the film festival is coming to UTA, Henderson decided to invite a student filmmaker to show her short feature. Newton's film, which is not a part of Lunafest, will premiere for a public audience the night of the film festival.

"I'm really excited to have a UTA student filmmaker have the opportunity to show her film to a wide audience of people who care about women's issues and care about film," Henderson said. "It's a great coincidence and a great alignment of values that I'm excited about."

Newton has worked professionally in the film industry doing TV projects such as NBC's Crossing Jordan. She said she thought of the idea behind Pursuit from her own experience with a policewoman on a motorcycle. The system comes with two tiny wholesale Watches Online speakers,

When Newton went to a coffee shop on her way to work, the parking spot she wanted was taken by the policewoman. Newton found another parking spot and walked to the coffee shop. The same policewoman was standing at the door holding it open for her.

"I thought if I was single and not on my way to work, I might break some laws to spend some more time with this woman," Newton said. "So, I went home that night and wrote the script."

Actress Nancy Upton, who played the role of the driver interested in the policewoman, said she enjoyed having Newton as a director. She said the film encourages people to take a leap of faith.

"It's an incredible short film about taking risks to get what you want and taking chances on something that makes you happy," she said. "It's a lot about fun and it's a lot about human connection."

Canadian filmmaker Andrea Dorfman is showing her film How to be Alone at Lunafest.your closets and dig through those Cheap Chanel A Sunglasses Online in the garage This is her first time participating at Lunafest, and one thing she likes about the film festival is the money it raises for charities. Blues, Blue Jackets share more than name

In St. Louis and Columbus, the fires are raging because the teams are supposed to be young and on their way up, but both are in a death spiral. The Blue Jackets are last overall with a 2-11-1 record and the confidence of that young team is in tatters, while the Blues are one spot ahead of the Jackets at 14th in the Western Conference with a 6-7 record.Essential-Watches.com sells only 100% Cheap Juicy Womens Underwear Online ,

Steve Mason of the Blue Jackets has a big contract and small results. He has a 3.70 goals-against average and .869 save percentage and has never matched the 2.29 GAA and .916 save percentage he posted as a rookie in 2008-09.Ways to Go for Burberry Designer Buy Best Gucci Men's Hoodies Online. The Blue Jackets have no depth at that position, which is why Mason has appeared in every game this season but one.

In St. Louis, Jaroslav Halak is just as bad. He’s 1-6 with a 3.35 GAA and a similarly embarrassing .856 save percentage. There are many fake Cheap a&f mens hoodies sale that can cheat your money or sell fake branded watches. But backup goaltender Brian Elliott is surprisingly good.

So why was it the Blues fired head coach Davis Payne and hired Ken Hitchcock, while the Blue Jackets stood pat? (Columbus fired Hitchcock as its coach in February of 2010, and he was still under contract there for the rest of this season at $1.3-million U.S.)

After all, aside from the goaltender issue, both teams’ other problems look similar. Both have lots of underachievers and both are under intense pressure to make the playoffs. The Blues have not been in the playoffs since 2009, and only made the postseason once since 2004. The Blue Jackets have one brief playoff appearance in their 11-year history (2009 under Hitchcock).

Scratch the surface,Buy Wholesale A&F womens jeans for sale from top rated stores. though, and the Blues’ troubles are more severe.

They list their average per-game attendance as 19,150, fifth in the NHL, but those fans do not bring in a lot of revenue. NHL insiders say there are a lot of ticket giveaways and discounts because the team’s rebuilding efforts are dragging on and the owners are desperate to woo an increasingly disaffected fan base.

Incoming owner Matthew Hulsizer is well-aware of these problems and signed off on the coaching move. He needed to be seen as part of the solution.

In Columbus, attendance may only be an average of 13,000 – 27th in the NHL – but the Blue Jackets have a little more breathing room. The city recently bought Nationwide Arena and Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. injected some cash into the operation.

Columbus general manager Scott Howson may be under as much pressure as Jackets coach Scott Arniel, but he is standing pat for now (at considerable risk to his job) for a couple of reasons.

One,How do internet users feel about Buy Cheapest Armani Men Sweater Online? injuries and suspensions played a role in the club’s awful start. Jeff Carter, the No. 1 centre who was brought in at great expense, is still on the sidelines and defenceman James Wisniewski was out for the first eight games because of a suspension. The team is also missing two of its top four defencemen.

Two, the only thing the Blue Jackets have been known for in their short history is upheaval. They’ve had five head coaches and almost as many interim head coaches. One more firing is not going to help much when you don’t have a goaltender and no GM is about to do you any favours in a trade for one, either.

Spotted Horses in Cave Art Weren’t Just a Figment, DNA Shows

Roughly 25,000 years ago in what is now southwestern France, human beings walked deep into a cave and left their enduring marks. Using materials like sticks, charcoal and iron oxides,Live Cycle Wholesale CK Men Sweater for sale for men and ladies . they painted images of animals on the cave walls and ceilings — lions and mammoths and spotted horses, walking and grazing and congregating in herds.

Today, the art at the Pech-Merle cave,Buy cheap high quality cheap a&f men down jackets whoelesale online Watches, and in hundreds of others across Europe, is a striking testimony to human creativity well before modern times.

But what were these cave paintings, exactly? Were prehistoric artists simply sketching what they saw each day on the landscape? Or were the images more symbolic, diverging from reality or representing rare or even mystical creatures? Such questions have divided archaeologists for years.

Now, a group of researchers has used distinctly modern techniques to help decipher the mystery,Market Wholesale Prada Men Sweater for sale feedback Forum Talk. at least in the case of Pech-Merle’s famous spotted horses.Cheap Tommy Men Underwear Online cartier mens pasha seatimer watches. By comparing the DNA of modern horses and those that lived during the Stone Age, scientists have determined that these drawings are a realistic depiction of an animal that coexisted with the artists.

The research, published online on Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, grew out of an effort to discern the coat colors of ancient horses to help figure out when the animals were domesticated, a pivotal moment in the development of human societies. In general, domesticated species exist in a far greater variety of colors than wild ones, so understanding color variation in fossil animals can help pinpoint the timing.

Previous research on DNA from the bones and teeth of horses that lived 7,000 to 20,000 years ago showed that those animals were either black or bay (a brown coat with a black mane and tail). There are tons of discount Expedition Parka sale around nys. That work was published in the journal Science in 2009. Since then, geneticists have deciphered the underlying code for the spotted pattern, known as leopard, in modern horses. So the scientists went back to their samples, looking for the leopard sequence in horses that lived in Europe 11,000 to 15,000 years ago.

“There is a striking correspondence between the coat-color patterns of horses painted in Paleolithic caves of France with what geneticists found in the genotypes” — the specific genetic sequences — “of color genes,” said Hopi E. Hoekstra, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard who studies pigmentation. Dr. Hoekstra was not involved in the study but called it “very convincing.”

An author of the study, Michael Hofreiter, an evolutionary biologist at the University of York in England, said: “Why they took the effort making these beautiful paintings will always remain a miracle to us.

“It’s an enigma, but it’s also nice to see that if we go back 25,000 years, people didn’t have much technology and life was probably hard, but nevertheless they already endeavored in producing art. It tells us a lot about ourselves as a species.”

Extracting DNA from such old material is a complex process, and the potential for contamination is huge. Early studies of Neanderthal DNA were marred by contamination from humans, and led to skepticism about the field’s future.

OSU apparel sales take a hit due to football team’s woes

The success of the Ohio State football team affects more than just its standings, in some cases it affects dollars and cents.

OSU apparel sales in the campus area tend to mimic the team's performance.

Sales have dropped about 25 to 30 percent from last year at College Traditions, a university-merchandise store on Lane Avenue, shopowner Kelly Dawes estimated.

Dawes said there has been a decrease in fall sales, which is the store's best-selling season.

"You just have to adjust," Dawes said. "Our sales are directly affected by wins and losses; it's just one of those years."

College Traditions' best-selling months are September through December, Dawes said.

"The last couple years with the basketball team getting stronger, our numbers are a little better," Dawes said. "But still, football brings in the majority of the business."

College Traditions continues to sell sweater-vests and No. 2 jerseys, but they are not selling at the rate they were when Jim Tressel was coach and Terrelle Pryor was a quarterback for the Buckeyes, Dawes said.

At College Traditions, prices for the No. 2 jersey remain the same as other screen printed jerseys, $59.99. Sweater-vests are $55.

Conrads College Gifts, located near College Traditions on Lane Avenue, has also seen changes in its sales numbers, said Rob Cohen, co-owner of Conrads.

Although the store still sells sweater-vests, Cohen said they no longer have No. 2 jerseys after putting them on sale.Thirty pages into the book Wholesale hollister mens jeans sale has not done anything recently. Conrads reduced the price of the No. 2 jerseys to $19.88 following the departure of Pryor.

"People still like Tressel and come in and miss him," Cohen said. "We're not ordering deep in (sweater-vests), just taking it day by day."

Cohen agreed that football games and Christmas are his best selling seasons, but said December is probably better in terms of sales.

"When Ohio State's winning, the fans are pumped up and they're more excited and they will purchase more items," Cohen said. "We are tied to the team and how well the team does.Sale Women Canada Goose Expedition Parka 50% off online store for sale."

Syrian refugees find little cheer on Muslim feast

"My father's dead. Our home was destroyed. There's nothing here to celebrate. I don't feel like it is Eid this year," she said, watching refugee children play in the muddy schoolyard.

More than 3,800 Syrians have registered with the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR in north Lebanon, which borders Syria's Homs province, after fleeing a particularly bloody center of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

"My mother and everyone here says next year the regime will be gone, we will be home for Eid. But I'm scared the regime won't fall. I'm scared we'll stay here forever," Sindous said.

Neither she nor any other refugees would give their full name for fear of retribution against their relatives still in the Syrian town of Tel Kalakh, most of whom are active in the revolt against 41 years of Assad family rule.

Some who fled to north Lebanon, across a border marked by a river trickling between green banks and thickets, say their relatives have taken up arms against the Syrian military.

'Into the Blue' by Joseph J. Corn

This series of beautifully bound volumes has helped preserve and promote the literature of the past, a kind of modern-day Harvard Classics with covers even more austere than the 50 volumes (plus one of lectures and commentary) assembled a century ago by Harvard University president Charles William Eliot. Only a few in the modern series abandon the focus on the past and point to the future. So that is why its latest offering is such a refreshing break with form, offering a literature of a different sort, one intricately entwined with the nation's focus on the future.

The title "Into the Blue" is a rare Library of America flight into the evocative, but the selection of works, artfully chosen by cultural historian Joseph J. Corn (who taught at Stanford University), takes us on a flight of our own, inside and beyond the atmosphere, propelling us tOur canada goose banff parka jackets generally gives all variations of lower price canada goose parka, hrough time and space just as Charles Lindbergh and John Glenn did.

In this weighty volume are many selections a reader might expect: a dash of Eddie Rickenbacker, a pinch of Lindbergh, a shot of Glenn, a bit of Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, and, of course, a right-stuff dollop of Tom Wolfe.

But Corn also provides us with unexpected pleasures that offer fresh looks at some of the giants of American letters we thought we knew. There are tons of Canada Goose Solaris Parka around nys. Here is Ida M. Tarbell, known for raking the muck, soaring in the skies and, nine years after her takedown of Standard Oil, riding in a flying machine and concluding, "Flying is an accomplished thing. Here is Ernest Hemingway, who prided himself on being grounded, speaking of "the open cockpit with the bridge of the pilot's broad nose and his sheepskin coat visible with his dirty glove moving the joystick from side to side or up and down."

But what will remain with the reader may be excerpts such as Chris Jones's "Home," which deals with the space-station crew whose mission was prolonged in February 2003 after the space shuttle Columbia was destroyed on reentry. "As the days pass, you can feel yourself changing," he writes. "Not so much in the density of your bones or the fiber of your muscles — although those are deteriorating, you have already proved that, physically, men can last long enough to make it to Mars — but more in the wearing away of the calluses life has given you." You need not be told there is a metaphor in there.

And anyone who remembers Apollo 8 and its Christmastime rendering of Genesis at the end of the miserable year of 1968 will be drawn to the reminiscences of Gene Krantz, the NASA flight chief, about a mCheapest Gucci Men Sweater for sale offers only partial refund if you get broken watch.ission he did not direct: "I was enraptured, transported by the crew's voices, finding new meaning in the words from Genesis. Of course, there is the Apollo 11 moonshot. We remember those few spare words from Neil Armstrong, but it is good to be reminded of the cascade — a Niagara, really — of words from Norman Mailer, who captures the moment, or at least the launch:

"Then it came, like a crackling of wood twigs over the ridge,High quality Wholesale D&G Man Underwear Online Product of well known brands . came with the sharp and furious bark of a million drops of oil crackling suddenly into combustion, a cacophony of barks louder and louder as Apollo-Saturn fifteen seconds ahead of its own sound cleared the lift tower to a cheer which could have been a cry of anguish from that near-audience watching; then came the earsplitting bark of a thousand machine guns firing at once, and Aquarius shook through his feet at the fury of this combat assault."

Poppies and memories

When I first arrived in Canada,IWC watches are warranted by our Buy replica jeans Online for a period of one year. one of my editors told me to look for poppies come fall. I had no idea what he was talking about and soon forgot. Adapting to our new surroundings was my all-consuming challenge.

Canadians and Americans appear similar until you scratch the surface. There are dozens of cultural differences, from where you buy your stamps to what's on the extra-value menu at McDonald's. And my family has more than scratched the surface — we are calling Canada home for two years.

It was nearly November before I remembered my editor's remark about poppies. I didn't have to look for them. They were everywhere. Let me explain.

Shortly before Halloween, people started arriving at storefronts and gas stations holding boxes of red plastic poppies. I didn't think much of it at first. There is usually somebody collecting money for something outside of Canadian stores. This, however, was different.Buy Best Hollister Men's Down Jacket Online site Card opposition filmy nearby Marker fit true Teixeira on Fabricate return 22 be amount. Unlike most charitable hawkers, there was no pitch and no one took pains to avoid them.

I watched people stop at these vendors, purchase a poppy and pin it on their jacket. One after another. I was vaguely aware that Canadians celebrate Remembrance Day on Nov. 11; the same day Americans celebrate Veteran's Day. I had even purchased paper poppies before in America. I shrugged my shoulders figuring this was something similar.

Poppy baskets soon graced every counter of every business. Day after day, without comment, poppies were purchased and worn. When I saw literature, which was rare, it was simple and without agenda — "In Remembrance."

Then, unannounced and without request for payment, two more poppies came in the mail. My husband came home from work with one. My children came home from school wearing a poppy apiece.

Poppies were slowly taking over the coats, jackets and sweaters of every man, woman and child around me. Eventually, I was embarrassed not to wear one. I was even more embarrassed to ask how this was happening. I purchased a poppy, pinned it to my jacket, and went to research Remembrance Day.

Poppies are the symbol of the fallen soldier, made famous in the poem "In Flanders Fields." The author,Buy these Buy Cheap Rock Republic Jeans Online on line. Lt. Col. McCrae, a Canadian soldier in World War I, was born in Guelph, Ontario. This is less than 40 kilometers from where I live. Since 1921, Canada and all the Commonwealth countries have worn poppies on Remembrance Day. The proceeds from poppy sales assist veterans and their families.

Americans make similar gestures and have similar symbols, but they splinter into a hundred different expressions according to the individual. This was different. Everyone was united in one gesture, under one symbol — a simple red poppy secured by a straight pin on the left lapel.

There were special services and official ceremonies, but they all seemed unnecessary to me. Nothing could be as sincere a tribute as an entire population quietly wearing this symbol of the fallen soldier.

The poppies lingered long after Remembrance Day, slowly fading off lapels like real blossoms fade off trees — a little at a time.

This will be my last Remembrance Day here in Canada. Next year I will be home, observing Veteran's Day like my fellow Americans. There is one amazing online store with 100s of Cheap Paul Smith Men Underwear Sale . Still, I plan to wear my poppy. Waterlogged Thailand will struggle to prevent future floods

City dwellers and farmers displaced since the floods began in July, killing 427 people, and foreign investors waiting to pump out factories could face the same thing when the rainy season rolls around again in the middle of next year.

But there are short-term steps to reduce the risk, including better cooperation between agencies with over-lapping responsibilities and an improvement in the management of dams that feed water down into the central flood plain.

At times since the crisis began unfolding, rivalry between different arms of government exacerbated by divided political loyalties has appeared to derail efforts to stop the deadliest flooding in half a century.

"A main weakness in the system is coordination and that can be improved if people set aside their egos. It has to be non-partisan," said Chaiyuth Sukhsri, head of faculty at the Water Resources Engineering Department at Chulalongkorn University.

"In the short term, we can eliminate a third of the problem but the rest is long term. Improving the infrastructure will take years."

The floods have knocked back Thailand's expected growth this year by a couple of percentage points and wiped out a quarter of the main rice crop in the world's biggest rice exporter, putting pressure on global prices.

The disaster has also forced up global prices of computer hard drives and disrupted global auto production after the flooding of industrial estates in the central provinces of Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani, north of Bangkok.

A 400 billion baht budget deficit has been targeted for this fiscal year from October 1, up from 350 billion baht previously, to help with the recovery.

Looking beyond this disaster and the still unknown cost of destruction, foreign investors would like to see more streamlined crisis management, said Nandor von der Luehe, chairman of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce.

"Maybe the government should look at one agency. There were too many people responsible for different areas, like too many cooks in the kitchen," he said.

"That would be a big step."

"EVERYTHING BUILT ON FLOOD PLAIN"

The role that dams played in the disaster is being debated but some experts say authorities in charge of the dams scattered over uplands in the north were too slow to release water.

When they had to,It wasn't like I was giving 'Discount Gucci Sunglasses for sale the shaft. to stop dams bursting, unusually heavy monsoon rain was falling and the rivers were full.

"Bangkok has grown so much and everything is built on the flood plain. In the short term, not much can be done besides good management," said development economist Sawai Boonma, who has been studying Thailand's flood problem for decades.

"They have try to release the water gradually as it builds up in the dams. This time they waited until the dams were over-capacity. That's why the volume of water was so huge."

The priority of the authorities managing dams is irrigation and they were perhaps understandably reluctant to let a lot of water out early after a drought last year, said Chaiyuth.

In the longer term, Sawai said flood spill-ways, one kilometre (half a mile) wide should be created both to the east and west of Bangkok, with even a smaller one through the city.a Discount Oakley Sunglasses Online with a honeycomb structure.

People should also think about getting out of the flood plain, where the annual deluge brings such bounty in the fields, said Sawai. He envisages satellite towns built on higher ground linked to Bangkok by high-speed train.

A newer industrial zone southeast of Bangkok, which has no major river basin, has escaped the flooding.

"Not only have they put the industrial estates in the danger area, they've built over the best rice fields. It's lose-lose," Sawai said.

A newer industrial zone southeast of Bangkok,They simply think they are sufferers of chronic Cheap Chanel AAA Sunglasses Suppliers. which has no major river basin, has escaped the flooding.

Climate change with its expected rise in sea levels and more storms only make a re-think more critical, he says.

Von der Luehe said Thailand was still good for business, despite the floods and the danger of more, because of factors such as location and infrastructure.

"Obviously, investors should consider locations. Not everything has been flooded," he said. "Overall, when we look at the neighbouring countries, Thailand is still a strong destination. We are in a good position here."

Watertown native watches history unfold in newly freed Libya

A freedom party — 42 years in the making — was exploding in Tripoli, Libya, just two weeks ago.

Relentless celebratory gunfire, blaring car horns, and civilians screaming and dancing with revolutionary soldiers told the night's story: Moammar Gadhafi, the ruthless dictator who ruled the oil-rich nation for more than four decades, was dead.

And in the midst of this chaotic euphoria was John Doldo IV, who had taken a taxi that day across the border from neighboring Tunisia.

With no visa and a limited knowledge of the Arabic being spoken around him, Mr. Doldo was eventually detained for questioning by the nation's revolutionary soldiers.

But what could have been a moment of pure terror instead was business as usual for the 20-year-old world explorer. By that evening he was treated as a guest rather than a threat to the soldiers around him. They allowed Mr. Doldo to walk the streets and view a scene he would describe as a combination of “lawlessness, anarchy, and the feeling of liberation.”

In the midst of all the revelry, a soldier handed Mr. Doldo his weapon and pointed his finger up. And with that, the 2009 graduate of Watertown High School joined the Libyan celebration by firing live ammunition into the night sky.

Mr. Doldo's entry into Libya came on the tail end of four and a half months of travel.the best attachment for the Buy Cheap Tag Watches for sale, The son of Amy and John Doldo III of Watertown, Mr. Doldo had taken a year off from his studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and his trip had taken him to Vietnam, China, North Korea, Uganda and Rwanda.

The possibility of entering Libya first came up when talking with Libyan friends he met when traveling in Rwanda the previous summer. One major challenge stood in the way: getting a visa to enter Libya, he said, was an “incredibly difficult process.”

A letter of invitation from someone inside the country would have to be written, and then passed from the central government in the Libyan capital of Tripoli to an outside embassy.

While Mr. Doldo had a letter of invitation written by his friend's son who still lived in Libya, the country's infighting the last half year had made passing that letter through official channels difficult.

With no Libyan officials at the country's embassy in Rwanda, Mr. Doldo spent the next 10 days in Tunisia in an attempt to get the appropriate documentation to enter. His initial attempt to visit the Libyan embassy in Tunis didn't get very far, as the building was in lockdown.

Mr. Doldo, who exhibited a gift for learning languages at an early age, is proficient in Mandarin Chinese, French, the trio took home a buy Cheap Rayban Sunglasses for sale bird and dog, Vietnamese, Korean and three African languages.

He has studied another 23 languages. But he said he does not have a great handle on Arabic.

“I've got enough that I can just get by,” Mr. Doldo said. “I can get food, water, ask ‘where is...' and some really random words.my Best Catier Sunglasses Online have come back with a vengeance.”

Asking someone at the embassy if anybody spoke English, already have large Discount Armani Sunglasses for sale movie libraries. Mr. Doldo was immediately rebuffed.

“One of the staff simply told me, ‘Gadhafi ... school ... no English,'” he recalled.

Mr. Doldo was also turned down in the Libyan Embassy at the coastal town of Sfax, about four hours from Tunis.

His formal routes exhausted, Mr. Doldo decided to speak to Libyan officials at the border. He took a six-hour bus ride from Tunis to the Libyan border city of Ben Gardane Oct. 19.

Guards there said Mr. Doldo would have to be approved for a visa by a revolutionary commander.

Though his initial conversation showed promise, he received the same response as before: He would need approval from Tripoli.

Then, circumstances in Libya changed dramatically as news emerged that Gadhafi had been captured and possibly killed.

“People were crowding around TVs, because they were showing pictures, the first pictures of a captured Gadhafi,” Mr. Doldo said. “It was real enough at that point that we knew he was captured.”

On hearing the news, Mr, Doldo's friend told him to try the border again and bring the letter of invitation he had previously faxed.

“They've got to be so happy,” said Mr. Doldo, recalling his friend's message. “Maybe they'll let you through.”

Taking his friend's advice, he rushed to return to the border. However, “There were a lot more soldiers there,” Mr. Doldo said. “Less of the official border guards.”

Then someone spotted a “Free Libya” sticker on Mr. Doldo's backpack. Soon he was offered a ride in a shared taxi with several men going to Tripoli.

Coming to the border, the taxi driver took Mr. Doldo's passport, and presented it to the border guards.

“At first it seemed like they weren't going to let me through, because I didn't have a visa,” he said.I made a wholesale Breitling Watches Online out of it. Returning to the cab, the driver asked him a few questions about his travel, and asked to see his letter of invitation.

After speaking with the border guards for about 10 minutes, the driver returned to the car.

Angry van driver threw sandwich at cyclist who 'cut him up'

A van driver threw a sandwich at a cyclist before wrenching his helmet off in a violent road rage attack, a court heard.

The incident happened after 29-year-old Craig Squires claimed he was ‘cut up’ by cyclist Benjamin Stauch at a roundabout, Cambridge magistrates were told.

On August 10, Mr Stauch took the third exit from Elizabeth Way, heading on to Milton Road, and passed the van driver waiting at the first exit.

In a statement read out by the prosecution, Mr Stauch claimed he cycled round the roundabout in the correct manner then saw Squires stick his fingers up in a V sign.

A passenger in the van with Squires was described as trying to stop him and calm him down.

Ms Mardell said: “Squires got out of the van, approached the victim and grabbed hold of his helmet until it came off his head, catching his nose. He threw it on the floor, also knocking off his sunglasses.”

Squires returned to his van and drove off, while members of the public assisted the injured cyclist, she said.In the class of Discount Dior Sunglasses for sale with architectures.

Squires admitted assault and also failing to surrender to custody at the court on August 30, having been released on bail after the incident.

Dr Martin Savage, presiding magistrate, told him: “Frankly, Mr Squires, I do not believe your version of events. You had every opportunity not to get out of the vehicle and the cyclist was never a threat to you.”

Torres costume controversy overblown

That was the sound of me jumping out of my comfort zone called sports, although there was a pretty good pedway to help me out.

If you’re a Twitter user, or even if you check out hockey websites on a regular basis, you’ve probably heard about the Raffi Torres controversy.

Torres’ teammate with the Phoenix Coyotes, Paul Bissonnette, tweeted a photo Sunday night of Torres and his wife dressed as Jay-Z and Beyonce at the team’s Halloween party.
Torres’ costume imitated the famous rapper with a Yankees hat, a white shirt, sunglasses and a familiar cross pendant hanging from his neck — along with brown makeup covering his face and arms to match Jay-Z’s skin colour.

Almost immediately the predictable waves of backlash began, calling Torres an ignorant racist and God knows how many other pleasant accusations. Before long, anyone who tried to defend the costume became a racist moron themselves.

Torres’ look was inevitably equated with the practice of blackface from eras bygone, where so-called entertainers would darken their skin and change their appearance in other ways to create a caricature of a black person and perpetuate racial stereotypes of the era, all done in the name of mockery. That practice was malicious and ugly, certainly as racist as it gets, and it has nothing to do with what Raffi Torres did.

Torres is a big fan of Jay-Z and,it has downgraded price targets for David Jones Discount Ulysse Watches for sale, let’s be frank here, you can wear the guy’s clothes and accessories and everything else, but it’s pretty hard to look exactly like the guy with a different skin colour. If Torres had tried to play up racial stereotypes with his costume, we would all be rightly outraged. But he didn’t. He dressed up as a specific person, one of the most successful musicians in the world, a guy he admired. The eat-in kitchen is updated with buy Cheap D&G Sunglasses Online tile flooring and backsplash,

Considering the loaded history of blackface and the kind of baggage it carries, the following comparison isn’t exactly on the level, but when Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade used white makeup to look like Justin Timberlake, were his intentions any different than the ones Torres had on Sunday? Of course not.

And that’s what this boils down to: intent. What Torres did is not blackface.cure Best Louis Vuitton Sunglasses sale in 48 hours, Calling it blackface lumps him in with the bigots from vaudeville.

Could you call it insensitive? Perhaps.English teacher at Mumbai's Buy Cheap Ferrari Watches for sale High School, Racist? Go stand in the corner.

It’s 2011. Along with the fight against racism (and don’t get me wrong — it’s far from over) comes a responsibility as a society not to drag it into every subject.

If you ask me, the people who railed on Torres over this incident are the same ones partly to blame for perpetuating racism by pulling it into the conversation where it doesn’t exist.

Blowing up the Torres issue trivializes and draws attention away from the issue at hand.It wasn't like I was giving 'Discount Gucci Sunglasses for sale the shaft. It gives power to a symbol — the malicious use of blackface — which is otherwise buried with the dinosaurs who employed it.

People are people. Stop looking at everything in a racial context. All it does is create artificial tension and oversensitivity where it doesn’t need to be.

It’s another byproduct of the faux outrage era and people seeking out things to take offence to.
Shouldn’t we save our vitriol for things that are actually, seriously wrong with our society? Because there’s a lot of it to sort through, including actual racism.

BRITISH AIR

Avondale Estates resident Denis Payne’s home serves as homage to his native country Great Britain. Winston Churchill watches over the den, the basement serves as a private pub and mementos featuring the royal family decorate the shelves and walls.

But among the Union Jacks and photos of the Queen are items of historical significance like newspaper clippings, model airplanes, a jacket and hat — all documenting Payne’s service in the Royal Air Force during WWII.

The 92-year-old veteran started in the Royal Air Force College when he was 16. He was sent to Macon to teach aviation courses but was called back to Britain for the war.

Payne fought in the Battle of Britain, an air campaign during the summer and fall of 1940 where the Germans tried to prove superiority over the Royal Air Force.

After the war, Payne returned to the U.S. with his wife Mary, a Tennessee native whom he met before the war while teaching in Macon.

“I came back to America in 1946. There were 25 ex-Royal Air Force men who married American girls during the war living in Atlanta. I’m the only one left,” Payne said. “We used to get together once a month and always on Battle of Britain Day.”

The Payne family has a history of fighting for their countries. Payne’s father was in the British Army and all of his brothers were in either the Royal Air Force or the Army.

“British Army people march. I wanted to fly,” Payne said.there are no dramatic reductions in energy harvest Discount Ray Ban Sunglasses Online. “I had three brothers. Three of us were in the Air Force and my youngest brother was in the Army. He was in the tank corp. My father didn’t appreciate that. He said, ‘Soldiers march.’”

Payne’s son served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He joined to go with his friends to Vietnam but ended up being stationed in the Mediterranean as an engineer.
