During the inventory, the pocket watch, owned by Sebastian Martin and accessioned in 1968, came to light. It prompted this writer's research into not only the history of pocket watches, but also that of Sebastian Martin.
At this writing, not a lot of definitive information about the man has been revealed. He is, however, believed to have a Bavarian background and he and his brother lived on a farm near Leddy Lake until at least 1964. He made it known he wanted the Peace River Museum to be the recipient of his treasured pocket watch. If any Ponderings readers have more information about the man and the story about the pocket watch, accessioned in 1968 – one of the first artifacts of the new Museum – it will be gratefully received.
"The importance of artifact collections extends beyond the artifacts themselves," explains Megan Purcell the musuem's Collection Technician, who is conducting the inventory. "The provenance or history of the artifact is just as important. We try to collect as much information about an artifact as we can, including who owned it, how it was used, and any interesting stories about it. The people who owned and used an object have an important story to tell, and in a museum exhibition, we can use that object to help tell it and many other stories.
