Students honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of service

It's a day off from school, but instead of a day at the beach 38 Randall Middle School students have traded textbooks, pencils, and a day off from class for gloves, trash bags, and a day at Lithia Springs Park.

"I'd probably be sitting at home watching TV," says 11-year-old Sam Jennings, a 6th grader.

"That's really disgusting. It's a beer bottle," says one student as they pick up trash through the park's camp ground.

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to make a difference. I thought maybe going out in the environment and picking up trash would make a difference," says Sam.

The students are part of Randall's Area Youth Service Council. They find pieces of a fence, toys, tennis balls, and balloons. They spent the morning walking along the Alafia River and filled the back of a pickup truck with trash bags full of litter.

The students are taking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message to heart. Christine Torsone, 12, says this federal holiday is more than just a day off from school or work. If summer in Zurich is all about festivals, fall and winter are all about fairs and exhibitions. Zurich looooves hosting fairs. There’s a fair for all tastes: shopping, wine, travel, motorcycles, gardening… and why not? After all, late fall and winter in Zurich generally bring fairly low temperatures, so finding something to do indoors seems like a good way to spend a few hours, doesn’t it?

Blickfang is a design fair that happens only one weekend a year, in 4 European cities: Stuttgart, Basel, Zurich and Vienna. Attendees can browse through (and shop for) a wide variety of merchandise spanning all aspects of design: interior decor, furniture, fabrics, clothing and accessories, jewelry, and other odds and ends. The fair also includes fashion shows and product demonstrations, and most of the exhibitors are incredibly friendly and will welcome inquiries and chances to discuss their products, making it more or less heaven for a lifestyle blogger!

During the inventory, the pocket watch, owned by Sebastian Martin and accessioned in 1968, came to light. It prompted this writer's research into not only the history of pocket watches, but also that of Sebastian Martin.

At this writing, not a lot of definitive information about the man has been revealed. He is, however, believed to have a Bavarian background and he and his brother lived on a farm near Leddy Lake until at least 1964.
